The news from The Times of India about lack of anatomy training for Medical students is alarming.
The top surgeon cautioned that Medical students who have completed their courses are lacking in anatomical training. It is reported that many never dissected a body and some never seen a cadaver. The news is about UK Education that at least two UK Medical Schools, Plymouth and Exeter now have no Cadaver based teaching. It is also worrying information that lack of confidence in anatomy forced them to apply for Post Graduate Surgical Training. This may create a shortage of Surgeons in UK, it is feared.
Two trends are reflected by the Royal College of Surgeons, first one, in the past 2 years. Britain has failed to fill all its training places for new surgeons, the reason being the applicants did not meet minimum standards. The second thing is, in the survey of Royal College of Surgeons of 1000 Medical graduates from 13 Universities, it was observed that more than half of the candidates complained of poor anatomy teaching in the Medical School, they have studied.
