Quality of Engineering faculties needs to be improved: VC

Sathymangalam: Improving the quality of engineering faculties is the need of the hour, said V. Ramachandran, the Anna University-Tiruchi Vice Chancellor.

He stated, although the nation and particularly the state of Tamil Nadu had sufficient number of engineering colleges there was a lack of good quality faculty and that need to be addressed in the present phase.

Addressing a gathering of students and faculty from engineering and polytechnic colleges across the country at the valedictory of the Twelfth ISTE Students National Convention 2009 at the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology on Sunday, Dr. Ramachandran said the need of the hour was to improve the quality of faculty and pointed out that 80 per cent of the faculty in engineering colleges under his jurisdiction possessed only B.E or B.Tech.

To resolve the issue the University in 2007 had started a continuing education programme for 550 faculties, the Vice Chancellor said that he had written to the Director of Technical Education, Government of Tamil Nadu to extend the programme to faculties of polytechnic colleges as well.

The Vice Chancellor also made another request to the ISTE: he wanted the organisation to digitise books, journals and research papers in its possession for easy access to students and also faculty.

'Such a move,' he said, 'would go a long way in supplementing classroom education.' N.R. Shetty, president, ISTE said lack of creativity was the bane of higher education system in India. He voiced for change in curriculum to facilitate students to tap their creative potential.

He along with the Vice Chancellor presented prizes to winners of various competitions that were organised as part of the event. Bannari Amman Institute of Technology won the over-all championship.
