The University Grants Commission approved 98 community colleges to offer skill based courses.
16 colleges are approved in Maharashtra, 13 for Tamil Nadu, 11 for Kerala and 4 for Assam. The duration for the courses will range from 6 months to 2 years. Certificate, diploma and advanced diplomas will be given.
University Grants Commission gets 320 proposals and the present proposal comes under UGCs 100 community colleges plan. This is a part of 12th five year plan.
It is expected that these degrees will reduce the unemployment problems in the society and may create more opportunities. The cost of the courses are economic, and flexible and viable, if few courses to mention are tourism and hospitality, power plant, chemistry, information technology, food processing, horticulture, health care, automobile management, and cost iron foundry
