Central Government of India, decided to upgrade the existing central and state Government Medical colleges by increasing the seats of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) to a tune of about 10,000. This is to maintain to maintain the doctor-patient ratio.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh chaired the meeting of the cabinet committee on Economic affairs and the proposal of ministry of Health and Family welfare has decided to the proposal of increasing the Medical seats in the country.
The cost of the proposal is Rs.10,000 crores with a proposed central assistance share of Rs.75600 crores and the share of union territory is Rs 7500 crores.
The current ratio of doctor-patient ration in India is 1: 2000 and the aim of the proposed of increasing the Medical seats is to bring down the rate to 1 : 1000. At percent there are around 50000 MBBS seats in the country.
Last week the centre approved proposal for the establishment of 5.8 new medical colleges by upgrading the existing distance hospitals in deficient seats will capacity of 100 MBBS seats in each medical college. This will refuse in an increase of 5800 seats. As such there are 381 medical colleges in the country will 49918 MBBS seats.
