Mumbai: The Bombay High Court today upheld the introduction of ATKT (Allowed To Keep Terms) facility for Standard XI admissions.
With this, those students who have failed in one or two subjects in the class X examinations would be able to take admission to Std XI, provided they clear their pending subjects by March next.
The scheme, introduced by the government this year, was opposed by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad which filed a PIL challenging its validity.
ABVP said there was no infrastructure to accommodate additional students -- who would come through ATKT -- in state colleges. As per a government estimate, about 1,50,000 students would become eligible for admission to Std XI through ATKT.
While dismissing ABVP's petition, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice J P Deodhar made it clear that before admissions are granted, government and SSC board must ensure that colleges have infrastructure to take in these additional students.
