Promoting use of bicycles as a healthy and energy-saving way to commute on campus, Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor Lt Gen (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah said he would use the vehicle to cover distances within the university.
By launching a drive to popularise bicycles on campus, the 65-year-old Vice Chancellor said that they were a much healthier option than motorbikes, which till now have been crowding roads within the sprawling campus.
Aiming to make the university a "genuine green campus", Shah noted that in most of the western countries, especially in USA, cycling in different university campuses had witnessed a major revival in recent years. This practise, he said, deserves to be emulated in India also.
The Vice Chancellor had recently faced flak from some quarters after he imposed a ban on motorcycles in residential hostels of the University from the new academic session.
