IIM-Kozhikode to open two satellite centres at Jammu and Kashmir

Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode had decided to make a modest start by opening two satellite centres - one each in Jammu and Kashmir - for its executive PG programme. The idea is to expand the higher education system to areas which remain neglected. According to IIM, Kozhikode director "it's time to look within before going global," which is why the IIM is setting up its centre in J&K, "where nobody wants to go". Admissions to these centres will start from August 2013 for the 2013-14 batch and aims to make premium executive management education accessible to working executives of the region. The IIM has also proposed to the J&K government for a "mini campus" in the state.

Pioneer among the IIMs for narrowing the gender divide for the first time in IIMs history (admitting 54.29% women students in its PGP batch of 2013 -15), this will be another milestone for the comparatively new IIM as it set to start two classroom centres for their executive post graduate programs - one in Jammu and the second in Kashmir.

Debashis Chatterjee, the director of IIM, Kozhikode said: "As a national institute of higher learning our commitment is first for the country, before looking at the world. There is no dearth of talent in J&K, but there is no access to quality education as no one wants to go there. Ours is not a commercial venture, but a social commitment. Moreover, being in Kozhikode doesn't limit us to Kerala, as our defining value is not geography, but our commitment for embracing the marginalised sections of India's youth in its quest for excellence. Our footprints in J&K will pave the way for opening the doors of management education to those who need it the most."

Terming the initiative a modest start, Chatterjee said that if given an approval the IIM would like to set up a mini campus in the state to offer non-executive programmes as well and that they have proposed the same to the J&K Government and is waiting for its nod. "We want to. But right now it all depends on the State Government. We envisage a mini campus will full fledged postgraduate management programmes."

The last date for application for the executive programme is August 25, 2013 and according to the IIM official the first batch will be small as compared to its other centres. This initiative is to provide an opportunity to enhance managerial and leadership skills for the locals who are forced to move to metropolitan cities to pursue higher education. The course would be delivered through in-campus classes and interactive learning platform classes conducted during evenings and weekends.
