Prof Syed Ibrahim Rizvi appointed as next head of the department of biochemistry in Allahabad University

Putting a rest over the confusion of the next head of the department of biochemistry in Allahabad University, the varsity has chosen Prof Syed Ibrahim Rizvi as the man for this job. He has taken the charge from Prof PoonamMittal.

Prof Rizvi is an eminent biochemist whose research on ageing is well known at the international level. His research on the role of plasma membrane redox system in controlling the rate of ageing in humans and the total life span in animals has been published in leading journals.

He is also a grantee of the International Foundation for Science, Sweden and has been a visiting faculty to many universities in countries like Italy, France, Greece, Sweden and Turkey and has also been invited as a speaker at major conferences globally.

The decision of appointing Prof Rizvi as the head bears significance as the other two professors, Prof D K Gupta who is facing an inquiry whereas Prof Bechan Sharam has been charged with sexual assault on a PhD scholar working under him.

As per the ordinance of AU, if the department has one or more professors, any associate professor cannot be made head of the department. Thus, in the case of biochemistry, Dr Rizvi was appointed as the head only after his promotion to the post of professor
