Physics Nobel prize winner inspires students

Madurai: In his first ever visit to Madurai as part of Honeywell initiative to inspire young minds in research activities, Physics Nobel Laureate Dr Eric A.Cornell interacted with the students at the Thiagarajar College of Engineering here on Wednesday.

Dr Cornell who shared the 2001 Nobel prize in Physics with two other scientists for the achievement of BoseEinstein condensation delivered a lecture on his prize winning project. Explaining the importance of quantum mechanics to students, he said for nanotechnology to reach its ultimate and scientific potential, one must confront the quantum in his lair.

Speaking to media persons latter, the American-born physicist said quantum mechanics was already ruling the world and his tool, though seen more as a pedagogic one, was used in new method of navigation for safer satellites and remote sensing.

He said the scope for Indian physicists in the global platform was positive.
