IIT Madras conducted its 50th convocation on friday

A total of 1,536 students were awarded degrees on Friday during the 50th convocation of IIT-Madras. It was a milestone in the history of the institution where only 106 degrees were awarded in 1964 when the first batch passed out.

Of 1,536 students, 318 were BTechs, 249 dual degree holders (BTech and MTech), 448 MTechs, 119 MS students, 24 MA, 51 MBA, 125 MSc, 156 PhD students and 46 PG diplomas.

The campus wore a festive look and parents went around the campus, taking in the atmosphere of the place where their wards spent four years. The chief guest was Subra Suresh, an alumnus and president of Carnegie Mellon University.

In his address, director Bhaskar Ramamurthy outlined the achievements of faculty and students. He said there were 7,533 students on the rolls, more than 50% of them post-graduate students. The institute also added 37 new faculty in 2013-13 out of which 3 are women.

When he spoke about MITr, a student welfare organisation on campus, many couldn't control their laughter on hearing the words "with the objective of nurturing physically, socially, emotionally and intellectually balanced life." Ramamurthy also broke into a smile.
