New Delhi: The govt is keen to give freedom to the central educational institutions, including IIMs and IITs, on financial and administrative matters, HRD Minister Sibal said.
He said if the institutes come up with specific vision and achieve them, the government would give them more freedom.
'I am willing that the government would incrementally let go if they (central educational institutes) give us a vision. If they give us five years vision or a goal post and achieve them, I will give them more freedom,' he said.
Sibal's views assume significance as the institutions, including IIMs, have evinced interest to open campuses abroad and expand their operations globally.
The freedom will allow the institute to generate funds from different sources including from consultancy and projects.
The IIMs have started their own corpus funds, generating their own resource. Similar model could be followed by other institutes.
Sibal said his ministry would never interfere with the autonomy of the institutes.
