Very soon students in Saurashtra University (SU) will be able to pursue undergraduate and postgraduate courses in astronomy and astrophysics.
The university has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Indian Planetarium Society (IPS) in Mumbai for starting a centre to run these courses.
Vice-chancellor of the university Dr Mahendra Padaliya said the MoU is aimed at promoting research in these two subjects.
"SU in association with IPS will set up an institute with defined courses and carry out research. IPS will look after academic aspect of the courses like preparing the syllabus and address the financial concerns,'' Dr Padaliya said.
SU officials said philanthropists in Mumbai and those from Saurashtra region are ready to donate over Rs 5 crore to start these courses at SU.
Founder president of IPS Dr J J Rawal said SU will be the first university in Gujarat that would offer courses in astronomy and astrophysics.
"The new centre will bring who's who of these fields to SU and students will get a chance to learn from them during their academic interactions at the centre," Dr Padaliya said.
Sources said the courses are likely to be introduced from the next academic session.
