UGC warns of stringent action against institutions putting up misleading advertisements

In an effort to weed out unscrupulous practice of deceiving students through misleading advertisements in the nation's dailies put up by various universities and to step up education standards in the country, University Grants Commission (UGC) cautioned students not to get influenced by such advertisements.

It also told that stringent action would be taken against such institutions that put up these misleading advertisements in various newspapers.

Claiming themselves to be study centres or learning centres of different universities enrolling students for various degree programmes, these small educational establishments also claim to be responsible for teaching and the systematic conduct of examinations.

Apart from providing syllabus and teaching materials, the university has no mechanism to monitor and maintain the academic standards of teaching being imparted at these centres.

It has asked students not to get carried away by such advertisement taking admission in unapproved study centres, off-campus centres, franchisee institutions, institutions and colleges claiming to be affiliated with private universities or deemed universities.

According to UGC, Universities functioning under the centre or state government could conduct courses only through its departments, its constituent colleges or through its affiliate colleges. However, an educational institution established through State Act should operate only within the territorial jurisdiction allotted to it under the Act and in no case beyond the territory of the State or its location.

Then, private universities and deemed universities can not affiliate any college or institution for conducting courses leading to the award of its diploma, degree or other qualifications.

Furthermore, UGC said no central, state, private or deemed universities could offer its courses through franchising arrangement with private coaching institutions, even for the purpose of conducting courses through long distance.

It also stated that no university has been authorized to award degrees that are not specified by UGC.

To wrap up, most importantly, the M.Phil/Ph.D course could not be run under distance mode and need to be conducted on only regular mode by any university, including private or deemed universities.
