With the energy market in India growing and international energy giants creating job opportunities , an MBA in oil and gas abroad could be an option for Indian students . One such programme is offered by the Aberdeen Business School, Robert Gordon University, Scotland.
Isabel Grant, senior lecturer, course leader for the MSc international marketing management and the full-time MBA and MBA-oil and gas management courses, Aberdeen Business School, informs that the school launched the MBA programme in oil and gas in 2007.
Some of the skill-sets that the programme focuses on include presentation skills, communication skills, numeracy; analytical and evaluative skills and the ability to think and respond in a strategic manner to issues being faced by global companies.
Apart from the academic input, Grant says, students get an opportunity to participate in additional workshops such as networking events; career workshops; seminars on presentation skills with practical exercises to develop these and industry-specific events. Also, students undertake a consultancy project with a company at the end of their course.
"The consultancy project," Grant adds, "involves students carrying out research and coming up with solutions to particular issues faced by the company - it is, therefore, a highly practical exercise, which is assessed by the academics . Students also need to present (and justify) their solution to the senior management of the company."
In order to pursue this programme, applicants are required to hold a first degree, at honours level at a top class banding and also need at least three-years of professional experience in the energy, or a related sector. All international students, for whom English is not their first language, must provide evidence of linguistic ability, by gaining either IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 570 (paper) or TOEFL 230 (computer) prior to receiving an unconditional offer of a place on the course.
How does the programme equip Indian students with global skills? "The skills," Grant informs, "developed on the courses are transferable skills. Students are encouraged to think independently; review critically; analyse and synthesise information. The fact that they also have the opportunity to study in a different environment gives them the chance to experience a different culture, which will be of immense value throughout their lives," she adds.
