After the central government sanctioned an Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) for the city, the district administration has identified two possible spots of 100 acre each. But the actual venue out of the two spots will be finalised by the state revenue department, following which the Maharashtra chief minister will give the final nod.
District collector Saurabh Rao said that a committee with the Nagpur University vice chancellor Vilas Sapkal has identified these two spots at Kaldongri and Chicholi. "Now it is for the revenue department to select one of the two spots so that chief minister Prithviraj Chavan can give the final nod," he said.
The IIIT is a part of the 20 new IIITs being developed by the central government on a public private partnership (PPP) model. Out of the 20 new IIITs announced, two are in state, one at Nagpur and other at Pune.
Vidarbha Economic Development (VED) had been pursuing the issue of procurement of land an developing an interface between the industry and the administration, as the industry will be pooling in money for the IIIT as per the PPP model.
VED president Devendra Parekh said that the revenue department has prepared a detailed project report (DPR) and submitted it to the state government. Sapkal said the stakeholders from the industries are also to be finalised as yet.
As per the proposal, the state government will be contributing Rs 50 crore for faculty development programme and will also contribute towards the recurring expenditure, up to Rs 10 crore for first four years. The equity share finalised for the IIIT has been fixed at 65% by the central government, 20% by Maharashtra government and 15% by the industry, for the development of the prestigious institute.
