A study has revealed that most grads of the Indian Institute of Managment, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) choose Mumbai over Manhattan, or for that matter, any other Indian city.
Mumbai is the most preferred destination for graduates of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), even as grads from other IIMs prefer to work in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi-Gurgaon-Noida or the National Capital Region (NCR), says the study by InsideIIM.com, a venture by Ankit Doshi, an alumnus of IIM Indore - Class of 2011.
The portal studied a popular professional networking site and divided the alumni into two nearly equal chronological parts - 1997-2004 and 2005-2013.
Out of 8494 IIM-A alumni from the batch of 2005-2013, 1267 students work in Mumbai, 1177 in NCR, 516 in Bangalore, and 238 in Hyderabad, whereas 225 and 221 students work in international destinations like the US and UAE.
The study also surveyed 2964 students of the IIM-A batch of 1997-2004, which ranks the US as the third preferred destination after Mumbai and NCR, followed by Bangalore, UK and Singapore.
From the 2005-2013 alumni base, only 1.8% grads work in the UK and 1.65% grads work in Singapore, whereas 5.9% grads work in the UK and 5.7% grads work in Singapore from the batch of 1997-2004.
As for the other IIMs, Mumbai is losing out on India's best and brightest to New Delhi. Apart from the southern IIMs- Bangalore and Kozhikode, all IIMs have the largest alumni base of their senior alumni (1997-2004) in Mumbai.
"Among many IIMs, there is a generational shift towards NCR over Mumbai as the top job location. On the other hand, it could also mean that NCR is where all the grunt work is done by new joinees, before they rise up the ranks and get promoted to a job posting in Mumbai," says the study.
Among other findings, a generational shift from investment banking to strategy consulting has also been observed at IIM-A.
In the early 2000s, students used to flock to investment banks in droves. In the batches from 1997-2004, there are five banks in the top eleven companies.
"That has now changed, and for the later batches (2005-2013), we see that consulting is clearly the top draw. Among functional areas, finance was the top choice for the batches between 1997 and 2004; now it is sales, followed by consulting," says the study.
