Nagaland governor Dr Ashwani Kumar said that there is an urgent need to establish a strong link between the syllabi of schools, colleges and universities and the need of students. He said this while addressing a meritorious award ceremony for toppers of Class XII and the degree examination conducted by NBSE and NU in 2012 on Saturday at the Durbar Hall Raj Bhavan in Kohima.
"The future of our next generation lies in our ability to align our education system today in such a manner that we are on top of the development ladder in the next 10-15 years. The contents of our syllabi have to be made relevant and should fulfill the requirements of students and society," the governor said.
Kumar opined that diploma and certificate courses must help students find the right job or help in self employment. Stating that education and employment goes hand in hand, the governor said that he was aghast to see the unemployment statistics in Nagaland, according to which graduates and undergraduates make up the maximum number of unemployed people.
"What is the point of our schools and colleges churning our graduates if they can't be self-employed or find a job that matches their requirements?" Dr Ashwani questioned. He said that it was time for students, parents, teachers and educationists to get together and establish a placement cell in each institution to help students who do not want to study beyond class XII to find employment.
The governor added that there is a need to base our education strategy on our talents and strong skills if we want to compete with the best educational institutions of the country.
