Bharathiar University has decide to hike various fees payable to the university from the current academic year after a decision taken at a syndicate meeting held on April 16.
Registrar of the university, PK Manoharan writing to all the principals of colleges affiliated to the university, said that during the syndicate meeting it was resolved that all the fees payable to the university by colleges have been increased by 25 per cent from the academic year 2013-14 on wards.
Decision to increase fees by 25 percent implies on registration (UG, PG), recognition (Tamil Nadu, outside Tamil Nadu, Foreign), matriculation, administrative, sports, library, exemption/lateral entry/private study, sports affiliation, transfer, transfer cum re-admission, re-admission, name change and autonomous fees. Further, fee for instruction medium too was hiked from existing rate of Rs 100 to Rs 500 now.
Apart from this, a new fee of Rs 50 in the name of campus placement, would be collected from the students by the university.
According to university officials, in 2011-12, the university made a reasonable hike in fees, however this years hike is much greater and the move could put an additional financial burden on students.
However, Vice Chancellor, G James Pitchai said the increase in fees is followed as per the University Grants Commission and Government norms.
But, C Pichandy, General Secretary, Association of University Teachers (AUT), condemned the decision of syndicate.
"The fee hike would affect students as well as parents. Several poor students are studying in the colleges and many are deciding to quit studies unable to pay their fees. Increase of fees would just add more pressure on them", he said.
On the one hand, when the government is advocating free education, providing free laptops and starting new colleges, this hike will become a counter productive to government’s initiative. Fee hike is contrary to the efforts taken by the Government of Tamil Nadu to enroll more students for higher education, he opined.
"Only, recently the fee was revised and revising the fee often is absurd. To add on, the colleges might demand more fee than the actual hike", he felt.
Bharathiar University should reconsider the fee hike, he demanded.
