Many students and their parents attended a question-answer seminar on Sunday to understand the online admission process and to gauge which branch of engineering was most suitable for the applicants.
The seminar was organized by a private engineering college of the city at Thakorbhai Desai Hall and was attended by member-secretary of the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) M N Patel, former vice-chancellor of Gujarat University Parimal Trivedi and several ACPC officials. Dr B J Shah, officer on special duty for ACPC, explained the online procedure step-by-step at the seminar.
Most of the parents attending the seminar were keen to know which branch of engineering their wards would get on the basis of their marks and preferences. With 121 colleges offering engineering courses in 35 branches, each student has theoretically 800 options to choose from.
"My son wants to study engineering. I want to make sure he gets the best branch. The seminar helped me clear a lot of doubts," said Ashok Makwana, executive secretary, GSFC.
When students asked ACPC member secretary M N Patel for his opinion on which branch to pursue, he stressed the importance of hard work. "You can go into any branch you like. If you work hard, success will follow," said Patel.
Over 60,000 engineering seats are on offer through centralized counselling. Prof S B Modha of L D Engineering College explained to students the reservation structure, quota and other technicalities during the session. He also explained the tuition fee waiver (TFW) scheme offered by the state government for students whose family income is less than Rs. 4.5 lakh a year.
Former VC of Gujarat University Parimal Trivedi advised parents to get all the details about the institute in which they want their children to study. "Check the infrastructure, labs, and placement record of the college before taking admission," said Trivedi.
