Not everybody gets an opportunity to learn under the editors of India's largest media conglomerate. At the ten-day Times-NIE Annual Summer Workshop, 30 students from schools across the city got a chance to look at the nuances of journalism.
Students attended a special editorial training session, visited the printing press and the studios of Times NOW, Radio Mirchi and Zoom. "A series of workshops on various aspects of journalism like reporting, editing and designing, combined with deadline-based inputs for the NIE helped me think on my feet and develop insights into the world of journalism," said Vishrut Kumar, a class VIII student of Lilavatibai Podar Senior Secondary School.
At the workshop, students wrote reviews, feature articles and edited content. Ratnottam Das of Class X, Apeejay School, Nerul said, "We learnt at TOI's Kandivli press that one machine produces over 1 lakh newspapers in an hour!"
In what the students called 'a dream come true', editor-in-chief of Times NOW Arnab Goswami had an hour-long interaction session with them. "The conversation with Mr Arnab was enriching. I learnt there is much more to journalism than just breaking news. It is about being the voice of the nation, representing the people's opinion and creating fear among wrongdoers and those in power," said Parina Muchhala from Gopi Birla Memorial School.
Students visited radio Mirchi's office where they interacted with radio jockeys. They gathered interesting tid-bits about B-town celebrities from Omar Qureshi, Zoom's editor-in-chief.
"At Times NIE, we learnt that it takes time, hard work and passion to reach to the topmost rung of the ladder. The workshop has made me think and write with a better approach," said Nikita Pardesi from N L Dalmia High School.
