Girl students studying in Punjab government's secondary and higher secondary schools are all set to get free hostel facilities with completion of 21 girls hostels in eight districts.
The state government is committed to promote girls education by providing quality education along with infrastructure and hostel facilities to the needy students belonging to schedule castes and marginalised sections of the society, a spokesman of the education department said.
These 21 hostels have been constructed at a cost of more than Rs 11 crore across Bathinda, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Mansa, Mukatsar, Patiala, Sangrur and Tarn Taran districts, which would accommodate 1,050 girl students, he said.
It was noticed that most girl students could not continue their studies due to economic constraints and the main objective of creating hostel facilities in government schools was to bring more and more girl students to schools after their elementary education, he said.
More areas of the state would be covered under this scheme in near future, he added.
