Girl's education, many social evil's solution: Collector

Hosur: Providing education to the girl child would certainly bring down female infanticide in the society, Krishnagiri District Collector V.K. Shanmugam said .

Speaking at the International Women's Day function in Hosur, he said that the Government had been taking steps to eradicate female infanticide in Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri.

The Government alone cannot eliminate the menace. Only if women resolve to take a firm stands on the issue, this social evil can be eradicated from the society. In the present scenario the self-help group members can play a decisive role towards this.

Taking initiatives at the grass root level with help of SHGs, this social evil can be brought to an end quickly.

Educating a woman was like educating a society the collector said.

Though we have made rapid progress technologically, still many poor women in backward blocks in Thali and Denkanikottai still cauterised their children for various kinds of ailments instead of taking them to the hospitals.

Child marriage is another social evil on sprawl and officials should take action against those involved in such acts.

Women SHGs could conduct camps and awareness programmes in villages to educate people against child marriages.

Over 500 women participated in the function.
