HRD minister M M Pallam Raju on Friday reiterated that his ministry would examine the concerns expressed by several eminent teachers that the Four Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUP) was being rushed by Delhi University.
However, he also said the ministry would not like to disturb the momentum towards its implementation. A decision on deferring the programme by a year would be left to Delhi University, he said. However, sources said the ministry is veering around to requesting DU to take the decision on its own so that it does not look like a diktat.
But publicly, Raju maintained his hands-off attitude. "We should not be seen as dictating them or questioning their wisdom. If they feel comfortable to go ahead, we don't want to come in the way," he said.
Raju said DU vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh was "grilled" thrice and he had given convincing replies to all queries. "We definitely don't want to derail the enthusiasm and momentum generated and certainly do not want to impinge on the academic authority and independence of the executive council of the university... About the concerns expressed, we are giving it deep thought and scrutiny and will ensure it is addressed," he said.
Raju said the concerns were limited to the speed with which the programme was being implemented and the omissions of some key elements of the course but not against FYUP.
