CIPET: offering a range of courses

There is a little bit of plastic in everybody’s life” is a true saying for the modern world. And, it works well as the motto of the Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET).

The institute, under the administrative control of the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, provides courses for students in the different aspects of plastics technology for students at its 15 centres spread over the country.

Its range of courses includes four-year diploma courses in Plastics Technology and Tool Manufacturing Technology for those who have passed Class X, a one year postgraduate diploma course in Plastics Engineering for B.E. graduates, a one-and-a-half year postgraduate diploma in Plastic Processing and Technology for students who have graduated with a B.Sc.

The institute also offers a four-year B.Tech. (and a two-year M.Tech.) in Plastics Technology for 10+2 students and recently started an M.E. programme in CAD/CAM/CAE. The applications process for this year for the courses is complete while applications are accepted throughout the year for six-month vocational courses. Courses in some of the centres including the Chennai centre are accredited by the AICTE. The M.E. course and the B.Tech. and M.Tech. courses at the Chennai centre are also affiliated to the Anna University, Chennai.

Providing details on the courses and the career opportunities after study at CIPET, S. Sugumar, chief manager (Technical), and other officials said the institute offered good opportunities with nearly 60-70 per cent of the students in Chennai getting placed in the industry. They said that the one-and-a-half year diploma was among the most popular courses as the students were given six-month in-house industrial training.

Speaking at the inauguration of the International Plastics Exposition IPLEX 2009 last week, S.K. Nayak, director-general, CIPET, noted that in spite of the economic slowdown, the plastics industry was witnessing growth because plastics were a major part of consumption. And with growth in the industry, employment opportunities were likely to increase.
