An international conference on Interdisciplinary Applications of Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems was recently conducted at the KJ Somaiya College of Science and Commerce, Mumbai. Sponsored by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), the conference theme aimed to propagate awareness on ‘remote sensing’ and its manifold applications in everyday life.
The event was inaugurated by Scot Wrighton, city manager, Lavasa Corporation, and witnessed various research paper presentations. Some of these included, Automatic Alcohol Detection in Vehicles by Shivam Parsahari; Monuments in the landscape by Srikumar Menon and Mayank Vahia; Floating Airport by Debjyoti Mallick and Mohit Saluja; Preparation of Hydro-geomorphological maps following ground validation by Sanhita Shasmal, and many others.
Commenting on the event, Wrighton, said, “Cities in India face two major problems: land and governance. There is a need for transparent and responsible governance if cities have to judiciously manage land which is a premium asset.”
