The Proctor of Aligarh Muslim University has resigned from his post without citing any reason.
Khurshid A Khan put his papers last night and his resignation has been accepted, official sources said here.
Although no reason has been cited, sources in the university said that the resignation has come in the wake of rise in the number of incidents of lawlessness in and around the university campus in recent weeks.
Law and order situation at the campus took another beating following a newspaper report today that some unidentified persons allegedly tried to "sexually assault" a girl student, who was in the campus to participate in a seminar and was staying in the University Guest House.
The incident happened on the night of April 20.
The miscreants escaped from the spot after another girl, a foreign student, raised alarm, the reports said.
No case was filed with the police as the victim left the town next morning.
When contacted, a university spokesman confirmed the incident and said that two members of the Guest House staff have been suspended for negligence and an enquiry has also been ordered.
