Gujarat University academicians are debating whether teachers checking exam papers at home, has compromised the quality of assessment.
The debate was opened up by the preliminary findings of reassessment of a few papers of MA Part I Economics exams. The MA Part I papers have revealed that the quality of assessment could be compromised. Over 50% of students flunked the exam, leading to demands for complete reassessment and paper checking. Not just students, even principals of colleges asked that the papers be reassessed.
Officials say that while teachers are given 40 papers each at centralized assessment centres for exams of third year undergraduate courses and final year PG courses, other papers are sent to teachers' homes.
"There have been reports that many teachers check as many as 1,500 papers a week. With an average of 200 papers checked each day, quality might be compromised," said a official.
However, after the semester system was introduced, there seems to be no option, as teachers cannot spend months checking papers, another official retorted.
