The newly introduced BCom (H) course at Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University has become a runaway hit with 12,000 applications received and two days to go before the registration process ends for the 2013-14 admissions. The university has just around 1,000 seats to offer—one-eighth the number in DU.
"So far we have received around 12,000 applications. Overall the number of applicants has also increased this year to 1.8 lakh from that of 1.72 lakh of last year across courses," said the PRO IP University, Nalini Ranjan.
University officials say the rush is mainly due to the popularity of the course but DU's shift to four-year undergraduate courses may have also prompted some students to apply at IP varsity.
With this, BCom (H) has become the third most sought after course in the university, behind engineering and law programmes. BCom (H) is also the university's first non-professional course. While some students are applying because they are not sure if they will be able to meet the high cutoffs of DU colleges, there are students who are not sure if they want to join a four-year degree course.
"My first choice is DU, but since I will be in the first batch of the four-year programme I would not like to take the risk. So as a backup plan I have applied at IP University," said Bikram Dutta, a Class XII commerce student of a South Delhi public school.
IP University officials, though, denied there was any competition. "DU's cutoffs will be 95% and above and those students will prefer DU. Most of our students will have 85-95%. But yes, BCom (H) has emerged as a new sought after course for our university," said Pradeep Upamanyu, joint registrar.
