Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is expected to lay the foundation stone of the first defence university in the country in Gurgaon near here in the last week of May.
The plan for the university, which will be headed by serving Lt Gen-rank officers from the three Services, was finalised in a meeting headed by Defence Minister A K Antony.
"The Prime Minister is likely to lay the foundation stone of the Indian National Defence University (INDU) to be located on over 200 acres of land at Binola near Gurgaon in Haryana," Defence Ministry said in a release.
"The university will have a mandate to provide knowledge based higher education for management of defence of the country keeping its participants abreast of emerging security challenges through scholarly research and training and will be a unique institution of national importance," it said.
It is expected that a large number of international officials as well as own security leaders, civilian and defence officials would visit the main campus for courses and training, it said.
The University will be headed by its President, who would be a three-star serving officer with Commander-in-Chief status on appointment, the Ministry said.
Once the courses start at the university, 66 per cent of students would be from the services whereas 33 per cent would be drawn from other government agencies, police and civil.
"The teaching faculty will comprise both military personnel and civilians in the ratio of 1:1. The University is being planned on the lines of IIT / IIMs," it said.
The university will be instituted by an Act of Parliament with President of India as the Visitor and Defence Minister as the Chancellor.
"It will be governed by its own norms and inculcate and promote coordination and interaction between Armed Forces and non-Armed Forces institutions in the country.
