The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has filed a note of dissent against constitution of pan IIM council on Monday that will coordinate between all the 13 IIMs. The council will also review them and submit actionable reports on them to the government. However, the ministry of human resources and development has given the institutes a 15-day time to give their final decision on the council formation.
The dissent note was filed by the premier management institute at a high level meeting held in New Delhi on Monday. The meeting was chaired by the minister of human resources and development, board chairman and director of all the IIMs. According to the sources, the minister Dr. M. Mangapati Pallam Raju in the meeting has briefed the delegates about the concept of council. He said that council formation will not affect autonomy of IIMs. It will be an umbrella body and will also allow the IIMs to offer degrees in place of diplomas.
Earlier, upset over the alleged attempt to curtail autonomy of the institutes, IIMs have indicated their opposition to the council formation. The IIMs have shot down the proposal of council formation in 2008. The revival has once again surprised the IIMs.
If formed, the council will be chaired by the Union HRD minister. The body will have over 50 members packed with government officials.
