A notification regarding retrospective change in pay scale has come as a shocker for 59 assistant professors of Delhi University. They received a letter from the assistant registrar stating they were being paid in a higher slab than what they were entitled to and that the earlier office order stands cancelled. They are now protesting, saying their decision to join had been based on the service condition offered to them.
An assistant professor from the department of political science said, "We were taken aback by the letter stating that we are paid more than the academic grade pay scale we are eligible for. I was appointed in 2010. The letter cited the University Grants Commission's circular of November 2012 and stated that consequent to the circular the competent authority of the university has ordered refixation of the pay with a revised grade pay of Rs 6,000. On appointment some of us were placed in the Rs 7,000 and Rs 8,000 grade."
In place of grade pay as applicable to Central Government employees, the term "academic grade pay" is being used for teachers and equivalent positions.
