St Xavier’s College, in association with Harvard University, is organising the Mumbai chapter of a national conference ‘Harvard College in Asia Programme’ (HCAP 2013).
This conference is annually organised in the month of March when delegates from Harvard University visit six different countries across Asia for a cross cultural and educational exchange programme. This Conference is organised at St Xavier’s College, Mumbai as the host representative educational institution of India, other educational institutes being Chulalongkorn University of Bangkok, University of Hong Kong, Bogazici University of Istanbul, EWHA Women’s University of Seoul and University of Tokyo.
The programme is a weeklong academic, cultural and social exchange initiative launched by Harvard University to facilitate scholarly and cultural exchange between its students and prominent academic institutions throughout Asia.
Delegates from the host universities in Asia visit Harvard University in January and the Harvard delegates visit the host Asian educational institutes in March. HCAP was established to gain a comprehensive Asian insight into various issues of international concern. Through TED talks, targeted discussions, the program aims to engage students in a thought provoking dialogue facilitating a free flow of ideas and opinions sans borders. HCAP, since its inception, has had successful conferences on Global Entrepreneurship, Sustainable Development, and Education in a Globalised World, Social Entrepreneurship, Global Healthcare Systems and Role of Technology in Society.
The National Conference in India, organised under HCAP, is a two-day event on the theme ‘Civil and Minority Rights’. It will feature talks, debates and panel discussions on a variety of topics which include Understanding the Tribal Community in India, The Indian Agrarian Crisis, Politics and Communalism in India, a discussion on Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Displacement in India and the Status of Women in India. The Conference also entails a special award-winning documentary screening of “Nero Guests” featuring Magsaysay Award winning journalist P Sainath on his research in rural India.
