The practicals of the third-year bachelor of science (BSc) degree course, which were to be held on Tuesday, had to be put off by Shivaji University, Kolhapur (SUK) owing to the teachers' ongoing boycott of exam work. A fresh schedule will be announced soon, the university authorities said.
The varsity's board of examination (BoE), which met later in the day, decided that the practicals for the first- and second-year BSc course will be conducted after the theory exam is over. However, the board members have expressed their concern over the third-year BSc practical getting postponed.
The BoE is the apex body for the conduct of exams in the university and comprises of the deans of all the faculties, examination department officials and officials from key academic units.
"Usually, we provide top priority to completing the third-year BSc practicals as the students have to prepare later for the entrance exams for their post-graduation courses in areas such as management, biotech and nanoscience," SUK vice-chancellor N J Pawar said.
B M Hirdekar, SUK's controller of examination, said, "We hope the teachers' boycott ends soon so that we can conduct the third-year BSc practicals well before the theory exams begin. At our meeting today, we have kept this option open. We have to make sure that the practicals are over before the theory papers."
"There is no such problem with first year and second year BSc students, which is why we have decided to conduct their practical exams after the theory. The colleges have been notified about this decision and we will post details of the same on the university's official website on Wednesday for the benefit of the students," he added.
The SUK, which has 279 affiliated colleges and 2.50 lakh students, conducts 265 exams during the April/May session and another 230 exams in the October/November session. The theory exams are to commence from March 22 and if the teachers' boycott continues much longer, the theory papers too will be delayed.
