Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University is likely to introduce 40 new courses including MA, MSc, MPhil, PhD, MTech and PG diploma from the 2013-14 academic session. The decision was taken in the academic council meeting held under the chairmanship of university's vice-chancellor Prof RC Sobti on Tuesday. Out of this, five masters and one MTech has been given green signal by the council.
According to university spokesperson, Govind Pandey, the various departments of the university have submitted the modalities for starting the proposed courses. "Proposals of about 40 new courses were put in the academic council meeting. The council, in principle, has agreed to introduce these courses from the new academic session," said Pandey, who is also the head of the department of mass communication and journalism.
The courses that are sure to begin from the upcoming academic session are MSc in industrial microbiology, MSc in food microbiology and toxicology, MSc in nanoscience and nanotechnology, Masters in Hindi, Masters in education and MTech in energy and environment. "Various departments have sent us the requirement in terms of faculty, non-teaching staff and infrastructure to begin the new courses. If the university meets the demands, all courses will commence from this year," said Pandey.
Besides, the university has also proposed two new schools, namely, School for Visual Arts and School for Education. At present, there are eight schools with a total of 22 departments running in the university. In order to meet the industry requirements, the university will also begin MBA in marketing management and MA/MSc in fashion technology. Also, one year LLM and five-year integrated BA-LLB is on cards. The V-C in his earlier meetings emphasised on introducing courses, which generate employment.
The council also decided to give fee concession upto 50% to single girl child, and meritorious students belonging to SC/ST category and others who hail from below poverty line (BPL) families. "In all courses, one additional seat will be added which is for the students coming from BPL families. This will encourage the students interested in studies," said Pandey.
The meeting also decided to allow final year PG students to appear in the PhD entrance test, thus benefitting thousands of students. The university also agreed to provide course work to PhD degree holders, but only if they want to. However, pursuing course for PhD degree holders has not been made compulsory.
