UGC asks for information on safety measures for women from Universities

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked for information from universities and colleges about their public transport system to take female students to and from the institution, lighting in the campus, toilet facilities, accommodation and health facilities for female students.

This is part of the list of questionnaires sent by UGC to the universities to check out facilities available for women in the campus and safety measures in place.

UGC has also sought to know about the existing arrangements on campus for safety of women and gender related courses offered on campus.

"The purpose of this questionnaire is to help the UGC in its mandate to further the cause of equity in higher education. The UGC is undertaking a review of currently existing arrangements on the campuses of all institutions of higher learning, to ensure the freedom, safety and security of women in particular and of the entire population of young people in general", it is stated in the draft questionnaire.

"Accordingly, this questionnaire has been prepared to identify any inadequacies in existing procedures and practices in order to formulate remedial measures to address the concerns of all women, and of the youth who study and live in any UGC recognized and supported institution of higher education", it added.

Recently, UGC has invited suggestions for the task force that has been set up to review the measures for ensuring safety of women on campuses and programmes for gender sensitization from higher education institutions. The task force has been constituted to review the present arrangements, identify any loopholes or inadequacies in them and formulate remedial measures to address concerns of girls and women and of the youth who study in the country's various campuses.
