Fifty five per cent of the teachers in major states find in-service trainings irrelevant according to a government study

The NCERT study, conducted across 15 states with focus on training provided during the year 2010-11, said in Haryana alone 79 per cent teachers considered training irrelevant.

The findings assume significance as quality education has been a major area of concern of the government under the RTE regime.

Pressing for reviewing and redesigning the content of teachers' training, the study said there is a direct correlation between learning outcome in classes and well- trained teachers.

Use of technology (films, videos, computer etc) in training was absent in almost all states, the study said as it emphasised on redesigning the training programme in keeping with the recommendations of the Justice Verma committee report for improving learning of elementary school children.

The study also took note of the disturbing trend that large numbers of teachers did not have pre-service education especially in Bihar, Meghalaya and Nagaland.

States covered under this study were Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Gujarat, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.
