Environmental degradation is threatening to reverse the gains made on the economic development front even as many regions, especially Asia, are witnessing good growth, a United Nations official said.
UN Resident Co-ordinator and UNDP Resident Representative Lise Grande also said environmental sustainability is emerging as a major challenge for economic growth.
She was speaking at the 'India Sustainability Conclave 2013' organised by industry body Ficci here.
"Environmental degradation is accelerating at an exponential rate and is threatening to reverse the gains on development, particularly the gains made on (eradicating) poverty," she said.
More than one billion people worldwide are estimated to be in poverty.
According to her, the private sector needs to take lead in ensuring sustainable development.
Noting that environmental sustainability is the story of the moment, Grande said the Indian government is considering various policies that would have positive impact on the private sector.
