3 PG diploma management courses offered by SVPI School of Textile and Management are not recognized

The All India Council of Technical Education has confirmed that three post-graduate diploma management courses offered by the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textile and Management are not recognized by it.

According to AICTE sources, the approval for PG diploma management courses were not extended for this year while only a post-facto approval was given to the examinations held in 2011-2012.

The admission for the current academic year was held without the approval of the AICTE. Approval for examinations during this year would be subjected to the submission of request and supporting documents by the institution authorities, AICTE sources said.

Interestingly, prospects of the institution says all its courses were approved by the AICTE but the council's website remain silent on the status of the institution run by the Union textile ministry.

When contacted, institution registrar A K Subrahmanyan too confirmed that the AICTE has not extended the approval for the current academic year. Its courses have no permanent approval by AICTE and it has been running the courses since 2009 by obtaining temporary approvals after conducting examinations.

Students allege that lack of permanent affiliation had landed them in a difficult situation with leading institutions across the country refuse to treat their degrees and diplomas equal to that of candidates passed out from recognized institutions. As the institution is not part of Association of Indian Universities, its courses are not being treated as qualified for appearing for higher courses in universities, students allege.

There was a large-scale student unrest in the institution during December last year and it followed assurances from government authorities of getting permanent recognition. A section of students of the college have started another round of agitation on Thursday. The fresh round of agitation was necessitated by the attempts of the institution authorities to conduct another round of examination without waiting for permanent approval, say students.

According to Anup Sahi, a second year student of PGDM, the institution attracted students through newspaper advertisements, saying the courses have all necessary approvals. The institute processed admissions without renewing AICTE approval for PG Diploma in Management (PGDM) courses on textile and apparels. Its PGDM course on retail was conducted without even applying for AICTE approval, said a student. While the institute's advertisements claimed to have a separate hostel for boys and girls and playground facility, it neither has a boys hostel nor a playground.

"It is astonishing that a central institute lacks approval for several courses. We joined this institute because we thought it would help boost our career. How can we undertake further studies when the courses we have completed here lack approval," said P Nithin, another student.

AICTE sources say the institution authorities were showing negligence in submitting required documents in time to facilitate permanent affiliation. They can apply for affiliation by completing all parameters laid down in our guidelines, the sources said. They have to wait for the process to be completed.
