The government said the ambitious Rs 5,000-crore National Knowledge Network (NKN) project would be completed within a year.
The project, began in 2009, is aimed at interlinking 1,500 agricultural, medical colleges, research institutions and other academic organisations with an objective to enable research students and others to have interaction and keep themselves abreast of development in their respective areas.
"The NKN project would enable building quality institutes, generate research faculties and best professional training centres," Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India, R Chidambaram, said at Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT) here on its Foundation Day.
He said of the 1,500 institutes to be interlinked through high fibre optic network, 964 institutes have already been connected and remaining would be connected within a year.
"They (institutes) would be linked with European Union Grid for exchange of knowledge, based on science, technology and biotechnology for bilateral research and development," Chidambaram said, adding that once operational, the Network will enable consultancy, data sharing and resource sharing.
