Coming to the rescue of a tenth standard student who was expelled from school for possessing tobacco, the Bombay High Court has allowed him to complete the academic year by granting him permission to appear in the forthcoming SSC examination in March.
Sixteen-year-old Ankit Jaiswal was expelled by the disciplinary committee of the Late Naraindas Bhagwandas Chhabda Military school at Raigaon in Satara district on August 16 last year for possessing tobacco in class.
Despite repeated requests, the school did not consider his case of withdrawing expulsion. Finally, Jaiswal secured admission in a local school in Navi Mumbai but when he pproached the Satara school for a leaving certificate, the authorities demanded Rs 20,000 from him and an undertaking that he was leaving on his own accord.
The boy's father filed a petition in the Bombay High Court challenging the school's decision to expel the student, besides asking Rs 20,000 for the school leaving certificate and an undertaking that he was leaving on his own will.
Considering that the student would lose an academic year and that a lenient approach should be taken in this matter, a division bench of Justices S F Vajifdar and Mridula Bhatkar directed the SSC board to accept the student's form with late fee as the last date for this has already expired.
