Assam has immense potential in floriculture and horticulture sectors and the state government has been giving thrust to the development of these sectors for generation of employment opportunities, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said.
"Floriculture is one of the fastest growing sectors that can generate lot of employment opportunities. Assam has lot of potential in this sector and the state government is giving priority to the growth and development of floriculture as well as horticulture," Gogoi said at the concluding ceremony of the Kolkata Flower Show 2013 in Kolkata today.
"Floriculture is a major component of horticulture. This is a sun-rise area under global perspective," Gogoi was quoted as saying in an official statement released here.
He said there are many scientific innovations in the floriculture sector and there is need to keep pace with the ever-changing consumer needs.
"We have to equip the farmers with best technologies so that they are capable of enhancing productivity," he said.
The Chief Minister said that though Assam has a very strong traditional background of floriculture, the rich and diverse floral wealth has not been explored commercially with a national and global outlook.
He said Assam is the homeland of more than 600 species of orchids alone and pointed out that the challenge is proper storage and marketing of the produce.
"Farmers must be able to get a ready market for their produce and that too at a remunerative price. We need to adopt a precise strategy to support our farmers," he said, adding that the focus is also on extracting the medicinal plants for making medicine which has no side effects.
The Kolkata Flower Show 2013 was organised by the Horticulture Society, Kolkata with support from the West Bengal government.
