Andhra Pradesh will soon have a Sports University, the first of its kind in the country.
Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, a former cricketer, at a review meeting on development of sports infrastructure in the state, directed the Sports Department to "go ahead" with the proposal for setting up the university.
A press release from the Chief Minister's Office said the university would have all sports disciplines and also sports medicine in its curricula.
The chief minister also directed the officials to take up construction of one sports stadium in each of the 294 assembly constituencies across the state.
"Designs should be flexible and the stadia should have indoor facilities. Priority should be given to facilities for popular sports of each district", the release quoted the chief minister as saying.
The government has also accorded administrative sanction for 87 new greenfield sports stadia-cum-cultural centres, in addition to the 30 ongoing stadia works, at a total cost of Rs 288.23 crore, the release added.
