New Delhi: The Delhi Government is planning to set up an online network by linking all the universities and other premier institutions in the city to facilitate optimum use of resources through sharing of expertise and other learning materials.
The project which will connect institutions such as the IIT, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Delhi University, would help these centres to share their experiences, a senior
official in the education department said.
"The network will be set up across the institutes to have access to library, journals and other learning materials," he said.
The network is envisaged following recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission (NKC), which was set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in 2005 to prepare a roadmap for transforming India into a knowledge society.
"The online network will enable sharing of resources of all the institutes and learning from each others experience and will help in meeting the acute shortage of technical
manpower across the state," he said.
Delhi Government has already adopted a blue print for implementation of the NKC recommendations here to make the city the knowledge capital of the country.
The Government has also planned to set up a central monitoring cell to coordinate with various universities and institutions for successful implementation of the project.
The official said the government would draw up legislation for setting up of the university system within a year.
The national capital may also soon have a separate university system based on some of the best performing varsity systems abroad.
The separate university system envisages creation of multiple universities and campuses united by a common system of management and governance which would only focus on
specialised courses.
The action plan to implement the NKC recommendations said a separate university system would encourage flexibility and efficiency, as the universities to be set up under it will be smaller in size.
The city government plans to set up a separate university of undergraduate education under the new model of higher education, he said.
This university is being established to increase students' access to undergraduate education, he added.
