Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) is likely to hold a re-exam of the I semester Math paper which was leaked on Tuesday. The re-exam proposal is awaiting the vice-chancellor's clearance.
It was a year ago that VTU turned to technology to fix the problem of question paper leaks.
The varsity introduced online Question Paper Delivery System (QPDS) at its 193 affiliated engineering colleges, beginning with the semester examination in June-July 2012. Despite all mechanisms in place, leaks continue to haunt VTU, as is evident during the ongoing I and II semester undergraduate exams.
Unconfirmed reports said papers of examinations held before Tuesday, too, were leaked, but VTU officials were clueless.
"We learnt about Tuesday's Math paper leak through the media. I've not yet seen the question paper and cannot comment if it's fake or not," said VTU vice-chancellor H Maheshappa.
The VTU registrar later confirmed that the leaked Math paper is genuine. "I saw the question paper, which is the one set by the varsity. We're not sure if the paper was leaked before the examination started or if it was circulated after 2pm," said KR Suresh, registrar, evaluation, VTU.
Suresh said the varsity will form an inquiry committee to look into the matter. "We'll form the committee today for a proper inquiry. We cannot make any statement until the committee comes up with some findings," said Suresh.
Under the online QDPS, principals of all affiliate colleges receive separate Internet Protocol addresses and a secret key only an hour before the exam. After that, principals can download the question papers.
To avoid technical glitches, alternative arrangements are also made to send question papers through data cards and compact discs (CDs).The question papers are supposed to be destroyed once downloaded.
