Sarva Siksha Abiyan (Education for All) on Wednesday launched street plays across the district and parts of Tirupur to create awareness among residents on the Right to Education Act.
According to sources, the team of eight artistes would tour the 22 blocks in the district and parts of Tirupur and stage street plays to create awareness in panchayats and places where people congregate.
Sources in the School Education Department here said that the team would conduct two programmes of one hour each for four days in a block. In a block, they would conduct eight programmes. The team would conduct the programmes mostly in the evenings when the villagers would be around to listen and watch them.
T. Sasikumar of Thendral Kalaikuzhu, the team that performs the drama, said that the members had experience in conducting such awareness programmes. They had participated in AIDS awareness, and Pudhu Vazhi scheme promotion.
He said that in the hour’s time the team had it would conduct three dramas, render seven songs and a few more.
The sources said that the team underwent training in Coimbatore and later at Chennai before starting the campaign. The Department had given it Rs. 8.80 lakh to cover all expenses including fuel costs.
