A 2,800-year-old Mummy of an Egyptian priest Nesperennub, has made Mumbai its resting place thanks to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS) formerly known as Prince of Wales Museum and British Museum, London. The mummy will be on display until March 24, 2013 at CSMVS.
Bilwa Kulkarni, education officer, CSMVS, said, “Egyptian mummies are a subject of fascination for people world over. Nesperennub was a priest at the temple of Khons at Karnak, the cult centre of the god Amun-Ra. As the mummy is inside the cartonnage (mummy case), use of leading medical imaging techniques has made it possible to provide to students detailed information like age, anatomy, nutritional habits, health and disease.”
The mummy on display is a part of a three month exhibition ‘Mummy: The Inside Story’. This is the first time a real mummy has been on display in India. Visitors will also get to see a 'virtual unwrap' of the mummy through a 20-minute 3D documentary. Other than the star attraction —the mummy— there are objects on display that piece together various aspects of ancient Egypt including life and afterlife.
The museum has organised special presentations, enrichment workshops custom-made for students, tourists, local communities and art enthusiasts. “We have planned an extensive education and public programme inspired by the Mummy exhibition for all kinds of visitors. School students study the Egyptian civilisation as part of their curriculum, and hence the exhibition bears a special relevance for them. Enrichment workshops on hieroglyphs, religion, animation with hieroglyphs, headdresses have been planned for children between 7 and 14 years,” explains Kulkarni. There are demonstration activities on preservation techniques every Tuesday for school students. The demonstration is accompanied with interactive sessions with the conservators. The museum has also organised orientation sessions for teachers.
