Recession whips recruitment in Eng colleges

Chennai: The placement rate in Anna University's Tamil Nadu State Level Placement (TNSLP)has slashed down from several thousands to less than 100 this year.

The top-notch companies stay back from recruitng students due to ongoing global economic slowdown and recession . Anna University vice-chancellor Prof P. Mannar Jawahar said that only three IT companies came forward to recruit engineering students this year and they recruited less than 100 students.

'It used to be a fanfare when we start the TNSLP every year with hundreds of students queuing up in front of Guindy Engineering College building right from 7 am to take up a written test for companies,' he said. 'And thousands of students from various engineering colleges in the state used to get placement.'

Prof Jawahar was the director of Anna University's centre for university industry collaboration before assuming charge as vice-chancellor.

He said that in the past several IT companies used to visit the campus to recruit students in hundreds but it was no longer happening as the industry had got a beating because of the economic slowdown.
