KJ Somaiya Centre for Buddhist Studies in association with jointly with Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi, (Deemed University) and Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Nalanda, commenced the 7th Biennial International Conference on December 5 at Somaiya Vidyavihar, Mumbai. Inaugurated by the vice dean of the Graduate School, Mahachulalongkorn University, Thailand, and Samir Somaiya, vice president of Somaiya Vidyavihar, the theme of the conference was Cross-Cultural Transmission of Buddhist Texts: Critical Edition, Transliteration and Translation. Papers were presented by noted Buddhist scholars from across India, Japan, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Europe and the US at the event. Apart from that, two publications on Buddhist studies were also released at the conference.
The conference intends to bring together scholars who have worked on critical editions of Buddhist manuscripts and translation of these texts to make them accessible to a larger audience. It also aims to examine the various Buddhist texts by the scholars to reach a common methodology to enable the consistent translation into English.
The conference will be conducted from December 5 to 7 and will involve discussion on the cross cultural translations of original Buddhist texts in Marathi, Devnagari and English, along with critical edition, transliteration and digitalisation of manuscripts.
