An award in the name of former Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral is being instituted by Punjabi University, Patiala.
Dr Jaspal Singh, Vice-Chancellor of the University, said, the decision was taken keeping in view Gujral's distinguished contribution to the fields of public service, diplomacy, international affairs and for furthering the cause of Punjabi culture.
The institution had earlier conferred Gujral the degree of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa).
Describing the leader as a committed and devoted Punjabi, Singh said the University will also start a special series of lectures on the Gujral Doctrine, which deals with India's relations with its neighbours.
These decisions will be ratified in the forthcoming meeting of the institution's syndicate.
