Welingkar Institute of Management Development and Research (WeSchool ) recently organised the Global Peace Initiative in the city of Mumbai to spread the message of peace and harmony to the world. ‘Peaceathon’, a walk for peace, with students of various schools and colleges was flagged off from CST, Churchgate and Trident on November 25.
Shashi Tharoor, minister of state for HRD, Government of India, joined Uday Salunkhe, group director, WeSchool along with students and citizens of Mumbai at the Gateway of India and took the oath of peace. The initiative was conceptualised by Kia Scherr of One Life Alliance, an NGO, jointly with WeSchool as its knowledge and project partner and Gul Kripalani, consul general of Iceland in Mumbai as its convener.
While paying rich tributes to the police and citizens who lost their lives in fighting terror during the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai, Tharoor, said, “Bombs and bullets cannot destroy us. The people of India have picked up the threads and moved on to rebuild their lives. Pluralism and coexistence are our strengths and we can’t let merchants of hate affect us.”
A panel discussion aptly titled, ‘Global Peace: Be the change that you want to see‘ was conducted on the following day with participants from corporates, media, sports and government. The event aimed to facilitate a platform for a dialogue for creation of structures of peace on a global scale. The effort to reinforce world peace formed the core agenda that will be discussed by the eminent panelists that included Sania Mirza, Niranjan Hiranandani, D Sivanandan and various other dignitaries.
